색에 사람을 맞추지 않습니다

디자이너로 일하던 시절, 색의 모호함이 늘 마음에 걸렸습니다. 같은 색도 곁에 놓인 색에 따라, 빛에 따라, 그것을 지닌 사람에 따라 달라 보였습니다. 어울리던 색이 어느 날은 어울리지 않았습니다. 색을 오래 다룰수록 확신이 생겼습니다. 그 ‘달라 보임’에는 분명한 원리가 있다고.
그 확신이 저를 퍼스널컬러로 이끌었습니다. 그러나 기존의 진단에는 한계가 있었습니다. 웜톤과 쿨톤이라는 이분법, 그마저도 기준점이 모호했습니다. 같은 사람이 업체마다 다른 진단을 받았습니다.
그래서 저는 다른 길을 택했습니다. 색에 사람을 맞추지 않는다. 사람이 가진 색에 색을 맞춘다. 피부와 모발과 눈동자 — 한 사람을 이루는 고유한 요소를 정확히 분석하는 일에 집중했습니다.
그 연구가 NCNS가 되었습니다. 중립의 기준점에서 출발해, 색상·명도·채도·이미지라는 네 개의 축으로 한 사람의 타고난 색을 읽어내는 시스템. 그 신뢰성은 특허로 보호받고 있습니다.
저에게 퍼스널컬러는 화려한 무언가가 아닙니다. 그 사람의 요소에 맞게, 실용적으로 쓸 수 있는 색이어야 합니다. 이 믿음은 이제 저만의 것이 아닙니다. 1,500여 명이 VSTlab의 기준을 배웠고, 그 기준 위에서 자격을 갖춘 이들이 누군가의 색을 찾아주고 있습니다. 그들이 자신의 브랜드를 세우고 한 사람의 전문가로 성장하는 모습 — 그것이 제가 이 길을 걸어온 가장 큰 보람입니다.

We Don’t Fit People to Colors
Welcome to VSTlab. I am Kim Mijin, founder and director.
In my years as a designer, the ambiguity of color always stayed with me. The same color looked different depending on the colors beside it, the light around it, the person who wore it. A shade that suited someone one day would not the next. The longer I worked with color, the more certain I became: that shifting followed a clear principle.
That conviction led me to personal color. But conventional analysis had its limits. A warm-cool dichotomy — and even that dividing line was unclear. The same person received different results from different studios.
So I chose another path. We do not fit people to colors. We fit colors to what each person already has. Skin, hair, eyes — I focused on analyzing, with precision, the elements that make up an individual.
That research became NCNS: a color classification system that begins from a neutral point of reference and reads a person’s innate coloring through four axes — hue, value, chroma, and image. Its reliability is protected by patents.
To me, personal color is not something ornamental. It must be color that can be used practically, suited to each person’s own elements. And this belief is no longer mine alone. Some 1,500 people have learned the standard VSTlab has built, and those qualified upon it now help others discover their colors. To see them establish their own brands and grow, each into a professional — that has been the greatest reward of this journey.
